Historical Background

Chandrapur, formerly known as Chanda, has a rich and storied past dating back to the 13th century. The city was established by the Gond King Khandkya Ballal Sah, who built the Chandrapur Fort and developed the city with planned roads and defense walls. Legends tell of the king being cured of a terminal illness by the holy water of the Jharpat river, leading him to establish this city near the confluence of the Erai and Zarpat rivers.

Chandrapur has seen the rule of Gond kings, followed by the Marathas, and eventually came under British rule. Its cultural blend reflects this layered heritage.
